About the Montana Department of Transportation

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is dedicated to the continuous improvement of employee safety and the achievement of an injury-free workplace. The department operates with a strong culture of public service, balancing professional demands with a commitment to work-life balance. For more details on MDT's mission, vision, and values, please visit mdt.mt.gov.

About the Role

We are recruiting two Professional Engineers in Bridge Design to serve as professional structural design engineers. In this role, you will be assigned final design work, design review, and final bridge plan checking on a project level basis. You will be responsible for all work with minimal guidance from the Bridge Area Engineer, demonstrating the judgment and competence required to be in responsible charge of engineering work.

Since bridge design directly impacts public safety, State law mandates that all design work be performed under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. You will be expected to possess a thorough knowledge of bridge structural design theory, AASHTO Design Specifications, and industry guidelines. Your responsibilities include performing preliminary design work, evaluating structural calculations for accuracy and constructability, and preparing necessary documentation. You will apply engineering judgment to interpret design standards and communicate effectively with designers, engineers, non-technical personnel, and the public.

Hiring Process

To apply, please submit a resume detailing your qualifications and work history, along with a cover letter of no more than two pages addressing your specific qualifications for the position. All online applications and required materials must be submitted before midnight on the closing date. Ensure all materials are selected as "Relevant" during submission.

If you require an accommodation with the application process, please contact the Human Resources and Occupational Safety Division at 406.444.6054. For further information regarding the full job description, please contact Morgan Stibi at mstibi@mt.gov.

Equal Opportunity and Eligibility

The Montana Department of Transportation is an equal opportunity employer. Women, racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans and disabled veterans are encouraged to apply. Individuals with disabilities needing assistance in the application process or those needing this announcement in an alternative format may call the Human Resources and Occupational Safety Division.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States must be provided if selected for hire. Generally, sponsorship for work authorization is not available through the State of Montana. MDT is not enrolled in E-Verify and is unable to hire F-1 STEM OPT visa candidates.
