The Center for Community Resilience (CCR) partners across business, community, philanthropic, advocacy, public education, health, and social sectors to support communities in adopting policies, programs, and practices that address adverse childhood experiences within the context of adverse community environments—the "Pair of ACEs." Housed within the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, CCR is widely recognized as a trusted thought partner and public health innovator among major foundations, national public health organizations, and federal leaders.
Known for its rigorous academic and social science research, CCR explicitly focuses on equity and prevention. The Center has garnered attention for translating public health science into real-time systems and policy change by centering community voices, integrating service delivery, and building political will for change. The CCR network comprises more than 15 teams across the country.
The Policy Director serves as a strategic leader within the Center, reporting directly to the Director of CCR. This role is designed to provide strategic policy guidance and coordinate government affairs to advance the Center's mission and goals across federal, state, and local government levels. The Policy Director will oversee advocacy strategies and technical assistance to support the national network of teams.
In this position, you will bridge the gap between research and action. You will work closely with the Policy Lab team to develop policy briefs based on qualitative and quantitative research from local health departments. Your day-to-day involves managing Policy Lab staff and student researchers, conducting historical and contextual research to support agenda development, and tracking legislation to identify opportunities that could impact the CCR policy agenda.
A significant portion of the role focuses on high-level stakeholder relations. You will develop relationships with Congressional staffers, create agendas for Congressional briefings, and meet regularly with lawmakers and community stakeholders. You will also lead the development of presentation materials, talking points for leadership, and advocacy training sessions for the national network. The work is generally performed in the CCR offices on GWU's Foggy Bottom campus, with travel and overnight stays required 3-4 times a year to support the national network.
