Hospital Corpsmen are the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in hospitals and clinics, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed with Marine expeditionary units in the field, you will gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. This role is designed for those passionate about healthcare who thrive in dynamic, high-stakes environments where teamwork and readiness are paramount.
Your day-to-day life will be a mix of clinical precision and rapid response. You will perform emergency medical treatments, assist in surgeries, administer medications, and conduct physical exams. Expect hands-on patient care that includes shift work, on-call duties, and the unique challenge of operating in diverse settings—from exam rooms and operating theaters to aid stations and field medical sites. Continuous professional growth is built into the mission, with ongoing certification in areas like trauma care and tactical combat casualty care.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, the Navy offers a vast array of advanced "C Schools" to specialize your skills in fields such as Independent Duty Corpsman, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, and dive medicine. You will also have opportunities for progressive professional development through leadership courses and warfare qualifications, earning pins such as Fleet Marine Force, Surface, or Aviation.
You can enter this rating through direct enlistment from civilian life, in-service conversion if you are a qualified Sailor from another rating, or Reserve accession for prior service members and select civilian medical professionals. Eligibility requires meeting general Navy standards, including U.S. citizenship or equivalent status, a high school diploma, and the ability to pass medical, vision, and physical fitness screenings. Specific requirements may vary based on current policy and program needs.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force that reflects the nation it serves.
