Hospital Corpsmen are the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in hospitals and clinics, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed with Marine expeditionary units, you will gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. This role is designed for those who thrive in dynamic environments, offering a unique blend of hands-on patient care, rapid response in emergent situations, and the opportunity to work alongside specialized units like SEALs and Seabees.
Your work will span a diverse range of settings, from exam rooms and operating theaters to field medical sites and aid stations. You will perform emergency medical treatments, administer medications and IVs, conduct physical exams, and assist in surgeries. The role demands adaptability, requiring you to shift between the structured environment of a clinic and the high-stakes conditions of a deployed field unit. You will work closely with physicians, nurses, and line units, maintaining patient records and performing clinical tests while ensuring readiness for any situation.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, you can pursue numerous advanced C Schools to specialize in areas such as Independent Duty Corpsman, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, radiology, or dive medicine. The Navy supports your professional growth through leadership courses and warfare qualifications, allowing you to earn pins such as Fleet Marine Force, Surface, or Aviation. You may also access education benefits like the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Tuition Assistance, and Navy COOL-funded certifications to further your career.
Direct enlistment is available from civilian life, with opportunities for in-service conversion for qualified Sailors and Reserve accession for prior service members. To join, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and specific medical, vision, and physical fitness requirements. You must also achieve the required test scores and pass background screenings.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force that reflects the communities we serve.
