Hospital Corpsmen are the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in hospitals and clinics, deployed aboard aircraft carriers, or operating in the field with Marine units, Corpsmen gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. This role is designed for those who thrive in high-stakes environments, offering a unique blend of hands-on patient care and military service.
You will serve as a vital link between healthcare professionals and the fleet, performing duties ranging from emergency trauma treatment and surgery assistance to preventive care and diagnostic testing. The work is dynamic, shifting between the structured environment of a clinic, the confined quarters of a ship, and the rugged conditions of expeditionary field units. Success in this role requires a strong emphasis on teamwork, readiness, and the ability to respond rapidly to emergent situations.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, the Navy offers a robust array of advanced "C Schools" that allow you to specialize in areas such as Independent Duty Corpsman, Fleet Marine Force, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, and dive medicine. Continuous professional development is a core tenet of the career, with opportunities for leadership courses and warfare qualifications like Fleet Marine Force and Surface, Aviation, or Expeditionary pins.
You can enter this rating through direct enlistment from civilian life, in-service conversion if you are a qualified Sailor from another rating, or Reserve accession for prior service members and select civilian medical professionals. Eligibility requires meeting general Navy enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and adherence to age, medical, vision, and character standards.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
