Hospital Corpsmen are the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in hospitals and clinics, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed with Marine expeditionary units in the field, Corpsmen gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. The role demands a unique blend of clinical expertise and military readiness, requiring professionals to perform emergency treatment, assist in surgery, and deliver preventive care in diverse environments ranging from exam rooms to aid stations.
Your work will be dynamic and mission-critical. You will serve as an operating room technician, administer medications and IVs, and conduct physical exams to assist in diagnosing injuries and diseases. The environment shifts rapidly between clinic, ward, and field settings, often requiring rapid response in emergent situations. You will work closely with medical teams, line units, and joint or coalition partners, maintaining patient records and performing clinical tests while supporting physicians and nurses across a wide range of specialties.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, the career offers numerous advanced C schools leading to specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, such as Independent Duty Corpsman, Fleet Marine Force, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, and dive medicine. Professional development continues through leadership courses and warfare qualifications, including Fleet Marine Force and Surface, Aviation, or Expeditionary pins.
You can enter this rating through direct enlistment from civilian life, in-service conversion for qualified Sailors from other ratings, or Reserve accession for prior service members and select civilian medical professionals. Eligibility requires meeting general Navy enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or equivalent status, a high school diploma, and adherence to age, medical, vision, and physical fitness requirements. A strong interest in healthcare and the willingness to work in clinical and field environments under potentially stressful conditions are essential.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. Our culture is built on teamwork, readiness, and the shared mission of serving those who serve.
