Hospital Corpsmen are the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in clinics and hospitals, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed with Marine expeditionary units in the field, Corpsmen gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. This role is designed for those passionate about healthcare who are ready to serve in diverse environments, from high-tech operating rooms to rapid-response field aid stations.
Your work will be dynamic and demanding. You will perform emergency medical treatments for specialized units like SEALs and Seabees, assist in surgeries as an operating room technician, and administer preventive care including immunizations and IVs. The environment shifts frequently: one day you might be conducting physical exams in a clinic, and the next you could be deployed with a fleet unit, managing trauma care under stressful conditions. Continuous certification in areas like tactical combat casualty care and basic life support ensures you remain ready for any mission.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, the Navy offers numerous advanced C Schools to specialize in fields such as Independent Duty Corpsman, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, and dive medicine. Professional development continues through leadership courses and warfare qualifications, allowing you to earn pins such as Fleet Marine Force, Surface, or Aviation.
You can enter this rating through direct enlistment from civilian life, in-service conversion if you are a qualified Sailor from another rating, or Reserve accession for prior service members. Eligibility requires meeting general Navy standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and adherence to medical, vision, and physical fitness requirements.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force that reflects the communities we serve.
