Hospital Corpsmen serve as the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in hospitals and clinics, aboard aircraft carriers and submarines, or deployed with Marine expeditionary units in the field, Corpsmen gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. The role is defined by a unique blend of high-level patient care and military readiness, requiring the ability to work effectively in diverse environments ranging from sterile operating rooms to austere field aid stations.
Corpsmen are integral to the medical team, performing a wide array of duties that include emergency medical treatment, administering medications and immunizations, conducting physical exams, and assisting in surgeries. The work is dynamic and often demanding, featuring shift work, on-call duties, and rapid response to emergent situations. Corpsmen frequently deploy with Marine units or embark on ships, working in close integration with line units and joint partners. Success in this role requires a strong emphasis on teamwork, adaptability, and the ability to maintain high standards of care under stressful conditions.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, Corpsmen can pursue numerous advanced "C Schools" to specialize in areas such as Independent Duty Corpsman, Fleet Marine Force, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, and dive medicine. Continuous professional development is a core component of the career, including leadership courses and warfare qualifications like Fleet Marine Force and Surface, Aviation, or Expeditionary pins. Corpsmen also maintain certification in critical areas such as basic life support, trauma care, and tactical combat casualty care.
Direct enlistment is available from civilian life, with opportunities for in-service conversion for qualified Sailors from other ratings and Reserve accession for prior service members. While specific qualifications are reviewed by recruiters, candidates typically need to be at least 17 years old, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and demonstrate a strong interest in healthcare. All applicants must meet general Navy enlistment standards, including eligibility to serve, medical and physical fitness requirements, and character standards.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force that reflects the communities we serve.
