Hospital Corpsmen are the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in hospitals and clinics, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed with Marine expeditionary units in the field, Corpsmen gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. This role is designed for those passionate about healthcare who are ready to serve in diverse environments ranging from quiet exam rooms to high-stress combat zones.
Your work will be dynamic and varied. You may perform emergency medical treatment for specialized units like SEALs and Seabees, assist in surgeries as an operating room technician, or administer preventive care and medications in a clinic setting. The role demands adaptability: one day you might be processing dental X-rays, and the next you could be providing rapid response in an emergent situation aboard a ship or in a field medical site. Continuous certification in areas like trauma care and tactical combat casualty care ensures you remain ready for the demands of the job.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, the Navy offers numerous advanced C schools that lead to specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, including Independent Duty Corpsman, Fleet Marine Force, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, and dive medicine. Professional development continues through leadership courses and warfare qualifications, such as Fleet Marine Force and Surface, Aviation, or Expeditionary pins.
You can enter this rating through direct enlistment from civilian life, in-service conversion for qualified Sailors from other ratings, or Reserve accession for prior service members and select civilian medical professionals. Eligibility requires meeting general Navy standards, including U.S. citizenship or equivalent status, a high school diploma, and adherence to medical, vision, and physical fitness requirements.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force that reflects the communities we serve.
