Hospital Corpsmen serve as the backbone of Navy medicine, providing essential medical and dental care to Sailors, Marines, and their families. Whether stationed in clinics, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed with expeditionary units in the field, you will gain broad clinical, technical, and operational experience. This role is designed for those who thrive in high-stakes environments and are committed to the health and readiness of the fleet.
Your work will be dynamic, shifting between the structured environment of a hospital ward and the rapid-response demands of a field aid station. You will perform emergency medical treatments for specialized units like SEALs and Seabees, assist in surgeries as an operating room technician, and administer critical care including IVs and immunizations. From processing dental X-rays to conducting physical exams and supporting physicians in diverse specialties, your day will be defined by teamwork, adaptability, and a strong emphasis on operational readiness.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Hospital Corpsman A School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From there, you can pursue numerous advanced C schools to specialize in areas such as Independent Duty Corpsman, Fleet Marine Force, surgical technology, respiratory therapy, or dive medicine. Professional development continues through leadership courses and warfare qualifications, allowing you to earn pins such as Fleet Marine Force, Surface, or Aviation as your career progresses.
Direct enlistment is available from civilian life, with opportunities for in-service conversion for qualified Sailors from other ratings and Reserve accession for prior service members. While specific qualifications vary, a genuine interest in healthcare and the willingness to work in clinical and field environments under potentially stressful conditions are essential. You must be eligible to serve in the United States Navy, meet age and medical standards, and possess the character and conduct required for military service.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status. Our culture is built on diversity and inclusion, ensuring every Sailor has the opportunity to serve and advance based on merit and dedication.
