Leidos Corporation is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). We support the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) by providing operational and logistical platforms for world-class science across three remote research stations—McMurdo, Palmer, and South Pole—and various deep field sites. Our mission is to expand scientific reach through increased operational effectiveness while maintaining the U.S.'s active presence on the continent.
This position serves as an LDB Lead Field Coordinator for the NASA Long Duration Balloon (LDB) facility, a day-use site located nine miles from McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf. The role is critical to the Antarctic summer season, supporting the daily commute of 40-60 science personnel and the preparation of 1-2 large helium-filled balloons carrying scientific instruments.
You will be the on-site primary point of contact when the facility manager is away, ensuring the facility is safely and smoothly managed. Your day-to-day involves monitoring facility safety, performing light snow grooming, ice chipping, and stair maintenance, and conducting daily inspections to track trends and prevent system failures. You will support all scientific balloon launch operations, which may occur overnight, on weekends, or holidays, and assist with logistical needs ranging from camp setup and cargo line maintenance to heavy equipment operation and fuel monitoring.
This is a seasonal role requiring deployment to Antarctica for approximately 16 to 20 weeks per year. The environment is remote and harsh, demanding the ability to work irregular hours, perform physical activities like heavy lifting and snow clearing, and collaborate effectively as a team player in extreme conditions.
Due to strict contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. Citizens and obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to their start date, a process that may take up to four months. All candidates must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations required by the NSF for Antarctic deployment.
Note on Hiring Status: This is an alternate opening. The identified candidate will only be officially hired should the primary candidate be deemed unfit for deployment or withdraw from consideration.
Leidos is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to diversity and inclusion, empowering our teams, and contributing to our communities. We operate sustainably and are guided by a commitment to do the right thing for our customers, our people, and our community.
