This position serves as a professional and supervisory leader for the City's landscape initiatives, focusing on the development, implementation, and maintenance of projects within City right-of-ways. The role is central to the City's aesthetic and environmental goals, requiring the incumbent to create all designs for landscape color displays and oversee the horticulture maintenance crews responsible for bringing these visions to life.
The work environment is dynamic, often requiring sensitivity to changing goals, priorities, and community needs. Incumbents may face exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold, as well as environmental factors such as dust, pollen, and fumes. The role demands physical agility, involving significant time spent walking, standing, and utilizing tools with precision, alongside the mental acuity to manage complex projects and respond to emergency calls.
Beyond technical execution, this role acts as a bridge between the Department and the community. The incumbent serves on advisory boards for organizations like Columbia Green and the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission, while also educating the public about horticulture through special events, public appearances, and newsletter articles. Success in this position requires balancing technical design skills with the ability to foster harmonious relations among crew members and coordinate effectively with other City divisions, county personnel, and external agencies.
