Role Overview
The Interventional Radiology (IVR) Technician performs and assists physicians with all aspects of the Interventional Radiology Department, adhering to established professional and departmental standards. This role involves operating and maintaining equipment within the interventional laboratory and providing patient care based on prior radiological and cardiovascular education and experience. The position requires knowledge and skills to deliver direct patient care appropriate for the full spectrum of patient populations. Technicians are required to participate in rotational on-call duties.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support and Patient Care
- Consult with physicians regarding procedures and obtain patient history, lab values, and clinical data.
- Greet patients pleasantly, confirm identification using National Patient Safety Identifiers, and introduce yourself.
- Explain procedures and answer questions from patients and families, referring complex inquiries to the physician as needed.
- Assist the physician in circulator and scrub technician roles.
- Anticipate the needs of the doctor and scrub tech, including setting correct injection parameters and imaging settings.
- Complete procedural paperwork and post-process images.
- Assist in the monitor role by reviewing patient history for risk indicators.
- Monitor patient vital signs and administer moderate sedation in accordance with hospital policy.
- Administer other medications under direct physician supervision when necessary.
- Document all care according to policy.
Safety and Equipment Management
- Provide radiation protection to patients, staff, and self according to prescribed safety standards.
- Comply with departmental policies regarding personal monitoring devices.
- Adjust technical factors to minimize radiation exposure while maximizing anatomical visualization.
- Demonstrate complete working knowledge of radiological equipment.
- Perform visual preventive maintenance checks and quality control tests on assigned equipment, reporting issues to appropriate personnel.
Administrative and Operational Duties
- Schedule patients for special procedures and coordinate scheduling with other departments.
- Maintain daily work logs and follow up on all patients routinely.
- Communicate schedule changes effectively among team members.
- Perform MRA 3D reconstruction.
- Maintain drug inventory according to policy.
- Ensure crash carts and drug boxes are accurately supplied and dated.
- Maintain necessary inventory of supplies such as catheters and guide wires, rotating stock orderly and eliminating outdated items.
Emergency Response
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate code procedures.
- Administer first aid or CPR as needed.
Qualifications and Physical Requirements
- Ability to push or pull up to 150 lbs.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to wear lead aprons for prolonged periods.

- Customer service skills for patients, team members, and visitors.
- Knowledge and experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR).
Required Credentials
- ARRT-RT (Radiological Technologist certification).
- BLS (Basic Life Saving certification) from the American Heart Association.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification).
Education
- Associate’s Degree.
Compensation
- Hourly Rate: $31.83 - $49.34 USD
