Remote Immigration Associate at Twin Cities Firm

Role Overview

Hong Immigration Law, based in Minneapolis, is seeking a dedicated Immigration Attorney to join the firm as its first full-time W-2 employee. This position is ideal for legal professionals passionate about removal defense, humanitarian cases, and family-based immigration who wish to focus primarily on substantive legal work rather than administrative or sales tasks. As a founding team member, you will have the opportunity to shape the firm’s culture and make a significant impact as the organization scales.

The firm is building a collaborative environment where team members can trust one another, share opinions openly, and work together effectively. The attorney in this role will be hands-on in case preparation, supported by paralegal and legal assistant resources.

Key Responsibilities

You will independently manage a diverse caseload, including:

• Defensive Asylum Work: Handle merits hearings before the Immigration Court, prepare briefs, conduct witness preparation, and utilize country condition reports.

• Family and Humanitarian Immigration: Manage I-130s, Adjustment of Status (AOS), Immigrant Visa (IV) processing, Waivers, U visas, T visas, and VAWA petitions.

• Litigation and Appeals: Manage appeals and federal litigation matters.

• General Immigration: Process N-400 applications and other related immigration forms.

• Client Relations: Manage all client communications effectively.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of experience in deportation defense, family-based immigration, and humanitarian-based immigration.

• Education and Licensing: Must hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and be licensed to practice law in Minnesota or another state.

• Language Skills: Fluency or professional proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

• Location Flexibility: While the role is initially 100% remote, candidates must be able to attend in-person court hearings and USCIS appearances in Minnesota. The firm covers travel expenses for these appearances. Candidates outside the Twin Cities area are considered, provided they can meet these travel requirements. Note: Once a new office is established, the role will likely transition to 1–2 days in-office per week based out of the Twin Cities.

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary: $125,000 to $140,000 per year, commensurate with experience and demonstrated value.

• Bonus Structure: A bonus structure may be introduced as the firm grows.

• Standard Benefits: Paid Time Off (PTO), paid holidays, and sick leave.

• Professional Development: Coverage for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) and bar dues.

• Future Benefits: The firm is exploring a benefits program that may include health insurance and a 401(k) retirement plan. Please note that health insurance and 401(k) options will likely not be available when the candidate initially joins.

Schedule and Start Date

• Hours: Realistic work week of 40–50 hours.

• Start Date: August or September.
