Job Description

Hackathon Community Manager

About Major League Hacking (MLH)

Major League Hacking (MLH) is on a mission to empower hackers. Since its inception in 2013, the organization has powered over 1,000 weekend-long invention marathons, known as hackathons. Each year, more than 135,000 young technologists and innovators worldwide attend MLH events and join the community. These events offer a self-driven learning environment where members grow outside the constraints of traditional academia.

Our team consists of 20 full-time employees, primarily based in Manhattan, with additional members in Seattle, London, and India. Our co-founders, Swift and Jon, were recognized by Forbes on the 2017 30 Under 30 list for their contributions to education. MLH partners with top technology brands such as Dell, Oculus, and Amazon to help them reach our community and distribute the latest tools. We are backed by world-class investors including General Catalyst, Alexis Ohanian (Reddit), Jeff Lawson (Twilio), and Sundance DiGiovanni (Major League Gaming). As a mission-driven B Corp, we are committed to responsibly serving the world and our community.

Role Overview

MLH is seeking a Hackathon Community Manager to join our growing team in the United States. This role is ideal for an aspiring developer advocate or an individual interested in mastering the intricacies of managing a large technical community. Every year, MLH collaborates with thousands of student and faculty event organizers globally to host hackathons. As a Hackathon Community Manager, you will work directly with these organizers to ensure the success of their events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruitment and Onboarding: Conduct interviews with potential hackathon organizers, articulate the value MLH brings to their events, and onboard new members into our organizer community.
  • Mentorship and Support: Collaborate closely with our community of event organizers to facilitate successful hackathon planning. This includes holding individual and group meetings to share best practices, provide constructive feedback, and guide organizers toward their goals.
  • Resource Creation: Develop content and tools designed to simplify the process of organizing a successful hackathon.
  • Relationship Management: Build and sustain strong connections with organizers within our community, nurturing these relationships over multiple years.
  • Event Representation: Travel to various hackathons throughout the year to represent MLH and meet with event organizers in person. These visits also provide opportunities for hands-on customer development research and mentoring other MLH staff.
  • Initiative Management: Partner with internal teams to launch new initiatives at hackathons. You will be responsible for communicating these changes and new product features to the organizer community and tracking their success.
  • Community Empowerment: Identify new opportunities to add value for hackers participating in MLH events. Leverage your close interactions with the community to source interesting opportunities and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement them.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in organizing events. Prior experience with hackathons is a significant advantage.
  • Familiarity and experience within the student hacker community.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel and work occasional weekends.
  • A strong passion for technical education and community building.

Note: If you are excited about this role but do not meet every single requirement, we encourage you to apply. We value problem-solving skills, and demonstrating how your unique experience can substitute for specific requirements may serve as your first 'hack' with us.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Competitive salary range: $67,500 - $75,000
  • Equity options
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401K retirement plan
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Travel opportunities

Work Environment and Location

We are a fully remote company but prefer to hire candidates located near existing team members to facilitate easier in-person collaboration. For this specific role, we are looking to hire within the New York City Area.

Diversity and Inclusion

We serve a diverse community and believe that the perspectives of women, people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those from backgrounds typically underrepresented in technology help us serve our community more deeply. We strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other marginalized communities.
