The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General, represents the state and defends the rights of its people. The Department handles all state criminal appeals and assists district attorneys with complex cases. It encompasses the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the Justice Academy, and various training divisions.
The State Crime Laboratory maintains a full-service forensic science facility to assist law enforcement agencies across North Carolina. Operating from a central laboratory in Raleigh and regional facilities in Edneyville and Greensboro, the Lab provides state-of-the-art services in drug analysis, blood alcohol, firearms, latent prints, footwear, biology, computer forensics, and trace evidence.
As a Forensic Scientist I, you will perform entry-level Trace Evidence casework, prepare written reports on analytical results, and provide expert testimony in court. Before beginning casework, you will complete prescribed training in specialty areas including hair, fiber, paint, tape, glass, fire debris, gunshot residue, and physical fit. You will also assist senior Forensic Scientists with assigned collateral duties.
Selected candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, which may take several months. This process includes a polygraph, credit and arrest checks, interviews with personal and professional references, education verification, fingerprinting, and a urinalysis drug screen. Out-of-state applicants may be required to return to North Carolina multiple times at their own expense to complete this process.
