The Motorhand serves as a critical support role on the drilling rig, working directly under the direction of the Rig Manager to ensure the safe and efficient operation of essential mechanical systems. This position is dedicated to performing regular preventative maintenance and repairs on generators, main engines, air compressors, water systems, and cold start air compressors. The primary goal is to prevent downtime and maintain the continual functioning of the equipment required for drilling operations.
Your day involves a proactive approach to equipment health, conducting regular rounds where you listen, look, and feel for early signs of mechanical issues. You will anticipate potential problems and implement corrective actions before they escalate. When issues arise, you are expected to analyze the problem area and solve the issue decisively to keep the system operational.
In addition to maintenance, the Motorhand plays a key role in safety and logistics. You will assist with major mechanical repairs alongside the Mechanic, supervise Floorhands and Derrickhands during rig up/down procedures, and operate forklifts to offload, backload, and relocate equipment, pipe, and tubulars. You must also ensure that all fuel and oil transfers are performed in strict compliance with state, federal, and company regulations.
This role requires a high level of alertness and physical endurance. You will work 12-hour tours, often on a 7-on/7-off or 14-on/14-off schedule, including holidays, weekends, and night shifts. The environment can be demanding, requiring you to stand and walk for a minimum of four hours at a time on various surfaces, including steel decking, gravel, board roads, and in conditions involving mud, snow, and ice.\n Physical demands include independently lifting and handling items up to 115 lbs, carrying 60 lbs up and down stairs, and maneuvering heavy tools like sledgehammers. You must be comfortable bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, and crawling while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. The ability to receive and execute both verbal and written instructions is essential.
Candidates must have a minimum of 3 months of experience as a Floorhand with Nabors Drilling USA or 6 months of experience as a Motorhand with another drilling company. Successful completion of Motorhand training at the NDUSA training center is required. Additionally, you must be able to wear respiratory protective devices and have reliable transportation to and from the rig site.
