The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum is a premier institution dedicated to the advancement of art and design education. As a campus environment committed to social equity, inclusion, environmental justice, and equal access, the Museum serves as a vital resource for RISD faculty and students, the broader academic community, and the general public.
The Curator of Asian Art is the sole curatorial-track position within the department, serving as the primary steward of the Museum's important Asian Art collection. This role exists to bridge the gap between scholarly research and public engagement, ensuring the collection is developed, cared for, and interpreted in alignment with the Museum's strategic plan.
In this position, you will manage the full lifecycle of the collection, from acquisition and deaccessioning to preservation and security. You will collaborate closely with the Registrar, Conservation, and Security departments to set standards for housing, storage, and installation. Beyond collection management, you will interpret Asian Art through exhibitions, publications, and educational programs, making the collection accessible and inclusive for diverse audiences.
The role also involves significant administrative and fundraising responsibilities. You will manage project budgets, prepare grant proposals, and cultivate relationships with donors and supporters. As a key member of the academic community, you will teach, answer scholarly inquiries, and contribute to the Museum's public relations efforts.
