PowerLines is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to modernizing the utility regulatory system for American energy consumers. Our mission is to lower utility bills and grow the economy by influencing state public utilities commissions (PUCs). These 200 commissioners oversee more than $200 billion in utility spending annually, wielding significant influence over how much people pay for energy, how utilities invest, and where new energy projects are built.
Rising utility bills have quickly become a national economic and political crisis. In the first half of 2025 alone, utility rate increase requests totaled $29 billion, a record that more than doubled the amount from the previous year. Recognized on the 2025 "TIME100 Next" list, PowerLines is rapidly becoming the go-to source for informing the national discussion on this issue. We have already shaped the conversation in major outlets including The New York Times, Bloomberg, CBS News, Financial Times, TIME, Vox, and MIT Technology Review.
As PowerLines' first full-time Communications Associate, you will play a critical role in shaping the trajectory of the national energy affordability conversation. This is an opportunity to take our initial success in informing the national and local discussion on energy affordability to the next level, growing our platform as a leading consumer voice amidst a crisis of rising utility bills.
You will be an early member of a dynamic, high-velocity startup environment, wearing multiple hats and managing high-impact workstreams. The ideal candidate is a scrappy team player with a growth mindset who takes initiative and leverages creative, strategic thinking. You will have direct exposure to leading national and local reporters and media outlets, contributing outsized impact in an underaddressed problem space. Reporting directly to the Founder and Executive Director, you will help define the future of our communications strategy.
We are looking for a savvy communications expert and entrepreneurial team player who can operate nimbly in a fast-paced environment. To apply, please submit your CV/resume and a cover letter. An optional writing and/or multimedia sample is encouraged.
All materials will be carefully read and considered. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by December 15, 2025, though we accept applications on a rolling basis.
