City Year is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across schools succeed. Our teams of AmeriCorps members provide comprehensive support to students, classrooms, and the entire school community. Our mission is to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that equips them with the skills and mindset necessary to thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
As a City Year AmeriCorps Member, you will serve as a student success coach and mentor for elementary, middle, and/or high school students. This is a paid, full-time, entry-level position designed for individuals ready to build themselves, give back, and help change the world.
Your service will focus on coaching and mentoring students to earn academic success, improve attendance, and develop positive behaviors. You will plan and monitor individual student progress while collaborating with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and in-class assistance. While experience in these specific tasks is not required, you will receive 2-4 weeks of training at the beginning of the year and work closely with partner teachers and school staff every step of the way.
You will work in a dynamic environment where you support academic coaching and interpersonal development through 1:1 and small group interactions. Your day-to-day involves developing literacy and math skills tailored to student levels, creating behavior management systems, and fostering interpersonal skills through proven strategies of learning, practice, reflection, and repetition.
Beyond the classroom, you will support whole-school initiatives to increase engagement with students and families. This includes conducting extended day and virtual programming before, during, and after school, ranging from academic enrichment and homework support to recreation, student clubs, and leadership development. You will also help create and co-lead events that recognize student growth in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior.
