Program Head of Outdoor Living/Junior Maine Guide Rooted in the Junior Maine Guide Curriculum, the "Outdoor Living" specialty camp program is designed to teach camping and outdoor skills, as well as facilitate connection and stewardship to place and planet. Minimum qualifications: At least 21 years of age, and 1-2 years of experience teaching outdoor skills Experience with outdoor safety including fire, boating, hiking, map reading, and orienteering Hold either a lifeguarding certification or be willing to obtain one (we can train) Familiarity with “Leave No Trace” practices and teaching Enjoy working with children of all backgrounds Passionate about working outdoors Commit to June 5th through August 26th Weekly Salary range: $625-$725 Possible Housing Preferred qualifications: Licensed Maine Guide or JMG alum; two years of direct experience leading wilderness activities for youth. Program Head Counselor of Outdoor Living duties include (but are not limited to): Plan logistics to execute established JMG curriculum (i.e. shelter building, fire starting, campfire cooking, tool use, tree identification, canoeing, and more) Provide engaging instruction of outdoor skills for campers grades 4th – 7th Facilitate weekly group dynamics to ensure a safe and fun experience for all campers Respond to individual camper needs (i.e. behavioral, social/emotional, disciplinary) Communicate and coordinate with an OL co-instructor and other traditional camp program counselors to provide an organized, well-planned OL program Never heard of the Junior Maine Guide Program? JMG is a long-established wilderness camping skills program sponsored by Maine Summer Camps and the Maine State Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. It is an outdoor skills program designed to foster enjoyable, safe and healthy outdoor living experiences for youth ages 9 – 18. JMG certification can lay the groundwork for later training and certification for a Maine Trip Leader permit, as well as provide a lifetime of enjoyment of living in concert with nature in the Maine wilderness.
