This position will be in support of the Symes Laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology. The incumbent will participate in Department of Defense funded projects, to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of blast injury on IPSC derived 3D-brain like cultures and on mouse brains. Using imaging, biochemical, genetic and epigenetic techniques, the project seeks to understand and identify novel pathways and potential biomarkers for blast injury to the brain. Investigation will include the study of metabolic and mitochondrial responses to blast, inflammatory and autophagy changes, and alterations in neuronal microtubule structure and function. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design and develop experiments, publish and present their research at scientific meetings. Interest in neuroscience is a distinct advantage. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Responsibilities Conduct experiments in human 2D and 3D tissue culture using cutting edge techniques for molecular pathway analyses of cellular responses to injury. Perform highly skilled and specialized laboratory research utilizing and designing experimental protocols which will involve specialized procedures such as confocal microscopy, mitochondrial isolation, analysis of RNA and protein expression, and isolation of cells from mouse brain. Formulate experimental hypotheses, design, and execute experimental protocols. Make scientific observations, maintain detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensure documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. Analyze and interpret experimental data, including statistical analyses. Train and supervise laboratory technicians, as needed.
