Custodian Custodial Department Primary Purpose: To perform the productive and effective work needed to keep facilities clean, sanitary, and free of hazards. Qualifications: Education/Certification: None Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Possess sound human relations skills Flexible and able to adjust daily routine Flexible to work any shift hours as assigned Ability to understand and follow detailed written and/or verbal instructions Ability to work in exposure to all weather conditions Must maintain means of transportation to work flexible schedule(s) day or night Experience: Experience in cleaning work places, schools and facilities Major Responsibilities and Duties: Custodial Services Operations: Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms. Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean. Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash. Follow established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Maintain good attendance. Report expected tardies and obtain supervisory approval to be absent. Promptly and personally telephone the central custodian office when not reporting to work. Comply willingly with directions received from foreman, director and/or principal. Demonstrate honesty in all aspects of work. Follow daily work schedule without unapproved deviations. Project a courteous and cheerful attitude towards faculty, students, and visitors. Cooperate and maintain harmonious relations with fellow workers. Minimize damage to buildings, equipment, furniture, and landscaping by following established procedures. Open, work in, and secure facility outside normal work hours and workdays when required. Report any violation of work procedures or safety standards by others. Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs. Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal. Assist in setting up facilities for special events. Equipment, Supplies and Safety: Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed. Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal. Operate and care for custodial equipment and tools. Complete work in a neat orderly, and safe manner. Follow safety instructions using chemicals. Wear required safety equipment and protective clothing while working. Maintain neat and sanitary appearance. Prevent the needless waste of supplies. Look for and report inoperative or unsafe items that need repair. Assist with opening and closing building each school day checking to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities. Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Other: Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief. Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: None Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Manual Trades - Custodial Personnel. Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; forklift or hydraulic lifting equipment; hand truck, dolly, and pallet jack; small hand tools; light truck or van. Vision and Hearing: Moderate to maximum. Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing, pulling, crawling, reaching, and twisting; prolonged standing/walking; climbing, wrist turn, and grasping occasionally. Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent walking, climbing ladders and scaffolding; grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, twisting, pinching, finger manipulation, overhead reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead. Lifting: Frequent lifting up to 35 pounds and occasionally lifting up to 45 pounds. Carrying: Occasionally carrying up to 50 pounds with the assistance of another person, not to exceed 80 pounds total. Environment: Work inside 95% and outside 5%; on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to hot and cold temperatures (70O– 95OF), dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, and vibration; work around moving objects or vehicles; may work alone; occasional prolonged or irregular hours. Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
