The Police Officer I serves as a foundational member of the department, operating under the general supervision of the Police Chief or their designee. This position is designed for an average difficulty assignment across all units, encompassing patrol, police support services, and investigative work. The role is critical to maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, and protecting life and property within the community.
In this role, you will assist in patrolling regular and high-crime areas, managing order, and executing crowd control measures during riots or large gatherings. Your duties include assisting with the initial and supplementary investigation of crimes, identifying and preserving evidence, and conducting crime scene photography. You will be responsible for executing writs, serving civil and criminal subpoenas, and apprehending individuals who violate the law.
The position requires active engagement with the public and the legal system, including interviewing witnesses and suspects, interrogating criminals, and appearing in court as a witness. You will also maintain photo, laboratory, and fingerprint files, ensuring the proper chain of evidence is kept for all criminal investigations. Additionally, you will prepare detailed police reports and maintain accurate records of all activities.
Candidates must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment (or by completion of the AZPost Academy) and possess a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must have a valid Arizona driver's license, be in good physical condition, and have no criminal conviction record. AZPost certification is required, or the ability to obtain it upon hiring.
Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of police principles, relevant laws, and city geography. The role demands the ability to act with sound judgment in emergency situations, operate a motor vehicle safely, and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public. Proficiency in written and oral expression, as well as the skillful use of firearms, is essential.
